My mom took my nephew Logan and Adam to a well known discount store for pool floaties. I won't mention the name of the establishment but, it rhymes with "manly collar."
Even though it is just the first part of July, swimming season has been going on for months as it has been hot since May. It's no surprise that there were no arm floaties available for Adam, and they aren't expecting more in stock. I'm guessing that's how Minnesotians feel if they don't buy gloves in August. You've got to act fast or suffer the season without.
An array of toy planes on the way out caught both boy's eyes. Grandma Cherrie could not deny them their wishes since the planes were only $1. It's a good thing because we have just enough space under the dresser for one more cheapy toy between the McDonald's freebies and last week's yard sale finds.
The boys patiently carried their prizes to the register. After the cashier rang up the toys, she immediately handed them back to the boys. The cashier was given $3 in cash, when my mom realized she had exact change. While she was digging in her wallet, she hears the cashier yelling, "Don't open that! Don't open that! Well now it's too late -- he opened it!" With that the cashier threw the dollars down on the counter in disgust. It was then that my mom realized that she was talking about her boys. Logan had ripped open his package. Adam had not but, I'm guessing it was only because he lacks the dexterity to open packages. What came out of the cashier's mouth next was even more surprising.
She looked at my mom, and then at the boys and boldy said, "Do you know that is stealing?! No money has exchanged hands." It was later that my mom realized, truly money had exchanged hands -- the cashier just chose to throw it down instead of placing it in the register. The cashier spouted off other rudities, followed by an explanation of the store's policy of not opening any item until it actually paid for. My mom was floored, especially since the total for the grandmother shopping spree was $2.15. Obviously, it is not stealing. Obviously, they had intent to pay as they were at the register, and she had handed the employee of the month money. If the cashier was that concerned she should have kept the merchandise until it was paid for by her standards.
My mom was glad the boys hadn't walked too near to the exit or the cashier may have tackled them. I'm sure Adam's disappointed, he's always wanted to ride in a real police car.

I'm thinking a call to the manager is in order. I hope your mom got her name! That is just absolutely ridiculous and the cashier needs a little lesson in "letter of the law versus spirit of the law". Crazy!
Whatever! Someone has gone on a power trip!
I have never been to that store, sounds like it's no loss. i can't believe that she said that was stealing.... you see all the time (at the grocery store for example) a parent has to take something away from kids to be rung up, and then give item back to kids while the rest of the cart is being rung up and paid for.
